Before I was even fully awake I opened my e-mail, and there it was from one of my clients:

"Is this another one of those Uranus-Pluto square things?"

Still struggling to wake up properly, I looked on the Internet and turned on the TV, and there it was: there was a slaughter at the premiere of "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises." The numbers at this point are still changing, but somewhere around 70 people were killed or injured.

If I recall correctly, Batman's parents were killed leaving a theater. Discuss the symbolism if you must.

Often at a time like this, people want to know "why." They turn to the news, their friends, their religion, their philosophy for answers. Depending on your source, you'll often get an answer involving Original Sin, or poor psychiatry, or politics. None of those ever seem to provide a sensible answer, so why not ask an astrologer?

Here's my answer:

James Holmes was born December 13th, 1987, time unknown, somewhere in Ohio. At first glance, it's a difficult chart (but they all are, once you get to know them). Mars conjunct Pluto in Scorpio? Sure, that sounds scary. Sun square Moon isn't very cozy either. Transiting Pluto was closely conjunct his Neptune, and transiting Uranus was square that natal Neptune.

I suppose we could cobble together a narrative about how his repressed smoldering temper (Mars/Pluto) and probable parental issues (Sun square Moon) resulted in extreme violence (the Uranus-Pluto square). But you know as well as i do that LOTS of people have bad transits... in fact, several thousand humans share a birthday with James Holmes.

Why did this happen? It's obviously the astrology. No, it's because Human Nature has fallen from Divine Grace (and handy catch-all excuse that really explains nothing). No, it's because there's not enough gun control. No, it's because if there was LESS gun control, someone could have shot back. No, it's because numerologically...

NO.

You want to make sense of this? Go ahead and apply astrology, or anything else you want. You'll only get a partial answer.. or worse, a partial answer that you'll mistake for the Complete Answer.

If you want to understand James Holmes, we need to turn to a voice of reason that Batman himself has turned to, time and again: his friend, confidante, and butler, the esteemed Mr. Alfred Pennyworth. This quote, from "The Dark Knight Rises," will answer your question most completely, I believe, about why these things happen:

"Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. "

You can't fix that with Astrology. You're welcome to pray and/or cry your eyes out and/or study psychology and/or become an astrologer though, if you think that will help.
